A powerful customer, Kristian Ormsby was new to the Hurricanes in 2003 after spending two seasons playing for the Chiefs.
Equally effective at both lock and blindside flanker, Ormsby made an immediate impression as a hard-hitting, straight running impact player, appearing 21 times off the bench, as well as nine times as a starter during his three seasons with the Hurricanes.
Ormsby was also contracted into the Wellington Lions from his home province of Counties Manukau, whom he had represented 27 times since 2000. Ormsby left Wellington after three seasons at the end of 2005, returning to play the first and second seasons of air New Zealand Cup rugby for Counties Manukau, and for further stints with the Chiefs from 2006-2008.
Ormsby has also had a high flying representative career, playing a number of times for New Zealand Maori since 2001, the year he was also double booked to play for the New Zealand U21 side in a clash of dates for the two sides. But he opted to make his reservations with the Maori. He also played for the New Zealand Sevens team in Dubai in 2001.
A gifted all-round sportsman, Ormsby was also a teenaged swimming and shot put champion and also a talented cricketer.
The 28-year old Ormsby left New Zealand rugby in May 2008 to sign a two-year contract with the Sale Sharks in England. The man dubbed ‘Whispers’ made six appearances in an injury disrupted first season, but went on to play 14 times in 2009/10.
